The Municipality
The Municipality of Pella is located in northern Greece, within the administrative Region of Central Macedonia. It was established under the 2011 local government reform by merging five former municipalities — Giannitsa, Krya Vrysi, Kyrros, Megas Alexandros, and Pella (town), which now serve as municipal units. Its administrative seat and largest urban center is Giannitsa.
The municipality spans an area of approximately 669.2 km². According to the most recent 2021 census, it has about 57,000 inhabitants.
Pella’s geography is a mix of fertile plains and gentle elevation, shaped by the valley fed by the Loudias River — which historically supported a lake/ wetland near Giannitsa, drained in the early 20th century, giving way to rich agricultural land. Because of its agricultural potential, much of the municipality’s economy remains rooted in farming and agro-food production. Complementing agriculture, there is a rising tourism potential — combining historical tourism (archaeological sites, museums), eco-tourism (natural landscapes, river valleys), and cultural tourism (local traditions, villages, rural life).
The municipality balances rural character and urban development: while the majority of its population lives in or around Giannitsa, many smaller towns and villages preserve traditional lifestyles and local community structure.
